Class sizes continue to increase across Ontario Universities. OCUFA (2014) estimates that between 2005 and 2012, there was at least a 40 percent increase in the number of first and second year classes with an enrolment of more than 100 students. Average class size at most research intensive universities exceeds 200. In many first-year programs, classes can easily be over 500 students. Is it more difficult to teach to a large class? Are there more classroom management problems? Can you do anything other than lecture? Why would anyone want to do this? Dr. Atkinson will address these (and other) issues and suggest some techniques you might consider using for large class instruction.
