The Centre for Teaching and Learning invites instructors and staff to a series of workshops that explore the use of clicker technology in the classroom, on Tuesday, November 23 and/or Wednesday, November 24, 2010.

Personal response systems (clickers) enable instructors to gauge student understanding of concepts and information in a course in real time. For an instructor seeking to engage students responsively, no matter what the class size, clickers are an amazingly powerful tool. Possible uses include:

  • uncovering typical misconceptions,
  • testing student ability to apply a concept to specific situations,
  • surveying student opinions,
  • predicting outcomes,
  • establishing baseline knowledge before embarking on a new topic,
  • checking comprehension of class readings before continuing, and
  • inspiring student discussion.

Each presentation will explore the use of TurningPoint, a software add-on to Microsoft PowerPoint that enables educators, trainers and presenters to develop and administer real-time assessments of participants within their PowerPoint presentations.

Sessions are either in room G141 Videoconference room (basement), or LT2103 Lambton Tower, depending on the day chosen.

Personal response systems (clickers)* enable students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts and information in a course in real time. Used thoughtfully, they provide unparalleled immediate information about student understanding to both learners and instructors. For an instructor seeking to engage with students in responsive and interactive ways, no matter what the class size, clickers are an amazingly powerful tool. A small list of possible uses includes:

  • uncovering typical misconceptions,
  • testing student ability to apply a concept to specific situations,
  • surveying student opinions,
  • predicting outcomes,
  • establishing baseline knowledge before embarking on a new topic,
  • checking comprehension of class readings before continuing, and
  • inspiring student discussion.

Come to this introductory session to see a demonstration of how they work, what a faculty member needs to have in place to operate them in class, and some tips for those who might just be considering using clickers in the next semester.
