Labs and tutorials represent both a large percentage of an undergraduate science students’ class time and an opportunity to concretize and clarify concepts from readings and lectures. As a GA/TA, you will be an important contact for students as they navigate course material, but as a student yourself, you may not consider yourself an expert in the subject you are teaching. In this workshop, we will explore ways in which you can address and encourage questions from your students, even when you are not confident in your own knowledge and experience with the topic.

Part of helping students truly learn involves careful and thoughtful feedback. Therefore, it is beneficial for TA/GAs to develop practical grading and feedback skills, as this will be one of your biggest responsibilities throughout the semester.
Through this workshop, you will be introduced to strategies to help you craft constructive, meaningful feedback aimed at helping students to improve. Differences will be described between the characteristics of feedback versus effective feedback. You will also have the opportunity to see various grading/feedback frameworks, and to practice the strategies learned in this session. By the end of this workshop, you will be able to apply various feedback methods that are compatible with any teaching context and style.
