Thus, this interactive and participatory workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to learn practical skills and strategies for promoting and leading effective discussions. Moreover, with the recent shift from traditional to online learning format, this session will focus particularly on leading effective and productive discussions in an online setting. We will explore topics such as creating a positive discussion environment, managing group dynamics, communicating effectively, and dealing with conflict.

Labs and tutorials are a key part of science courses, helping students engage in what they’re learning, gain practical experience, and practice problem-solving and critical thinking. Labs/tutorials also provide a window into the nature of science and research. GAs and TAs play a vital role in the success of these sessions! Online labs and tutorials this Fall may be quite different from what you’ve previously experienced as a GA/TA and/or student, with some challenges and opportunities. This workshop explores practical tips and evidence-based methods to help you make your labs and tutorials interactive, engaging, and effective. We will discuss strategies for online and face-to-face environments.

Leading effective labs and tutorials online presents challenges that can be difficult to maneuver. In addition to the technical difficulties that are often present, it can be tricky to gage if students are learning from the information being presented. This workshop will include a review of student feedback on techniques that were implemented in engineering labs and tutorials during the Intersummer semester to see what they thought worked for them and what they thought was less effective. The goal of this workshop is to present tips and advice for GAs and TAs from a student perspective to ensure students get the most out of their time spent in labs and tutorials.

Impostor Phenomenon (IP) is commonly experienced by individuals in academia and is characterized as an intellectual feeling of phoniness that can undermine confidence in oneself. However, many students do not realize how common this phenomenon is. In this workshop, we will share some results from a campus-wide survey we recently conducted on the Impostor Phenomenon in undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, staff, and faculty members. We will also provide practical tips and resources for recognizing and managing feelings of impostorism.
